Design Challenge

"The Summer Games"

Compete for a chance to win: $1,000 for Gold, $500 for Silver, and $250 for Bronze!

Let the Games Begin!

This summer, you're invited to learn how to build something truly amazing in Fortnite Creative. By participating in our design challenge, you'll learn how to build your own games, share them with a global audience, compete to earn V-Bucks, and win real cash prizes.

My name is Andrew VH. I'm an educator who is passionate about using Fortnite as a Learning Laboratory. I'll be your coach, helping you vault over every hurdle on your way to victory - the gold medal prize of $1,000 USD.

Don't think you can win first place? That's ok. Everyone who submits an entry will be eligible for our random drawing to receive one of four “Lucky Loot” giveaways—each valued at $250. Anyone can win!

The contest consists of three progressively more challenging tasks to complete.  Each task builds on the next and helps you develop new skills in Fortnite Creative. Your ultimate challenge is to design a one-of-a-kind virtual sporting event that centers around Fortnite's unique gameplay.

Winners will be selected by a jury of their peers during our Gold Medal livestream event on Saturday, August 10 at 3:00 PM EDT. To get started, complete this registration form.

Round 1

Quarterfinals (Due July 15)

Your challenge is to create an opening ceremony for our "Summer Games" in Fortnite Creative. Your island should include at least three things that are normally found at an opening ceremony for a major sporting event (things like a stadium, a parade, fireworks, symbols of sportsmanship, etc.).

Your opening ceremony island must include four player spawner pads, at least 3 pre-fab structures, at least 20 props, and at least 5 devices in order to be considered a qualifying entry.

Create a brief video tour of your island and submit a link to your video using the Round 1 submission form

Everyone who submits a qualifying entry will receive an invitation to attend our Gold Medal livestream event. The top three entries will receive 13,500 V-bucks (gold), 5000 V-bucks (silver), and 2800 V-Bucks (bronze) and will be featured on our contest website and social media channels.

Round 2

Semifinals (Due July 22)

Your next challenge is to re-create an existing real-life sporting event in Fortnite Creative. Your island should include a scoring system that allows one player to beat another. The look of your island should reflect the real-world sporting event that you are trying to re-create. Keep it simple - think running, swimming, or archery. The real challenge here is building a scoring system that works. (Be sure to check the tutorials below for helpful tips.)

Create a brief video tour of your island, and submit a link to your video using the Round 2 submission form

Everyone who successfully completes this round will receive an invitation to judge the final, gold-medal round.

Round 3

Finals (Due July 29)

Your final challenge is to invent a new sporting event that is totally unique to Fortnite. Your island should once again include a scoring system that allows one player to beat another. Beyond that, the environment and style of competition is completely up to you. Just keep in mind that the theme is still "The Summer Games" so try to imagine what kind of crazy sporting event might exist in the Fortnite universe.

Create a brief video tour of your island, and submit a link to your video using the Round 3 submission form

The top three entries will present their islands during our Gold Medal livestream on August 10. Voting will occur during the livestream, and the winners will receive $1,000 (gold), $500 (silver), and $250 (bronze).

Furthermore, everyone who submits a Round 3 entry will be included in our random drawing to receive one of four “Lucky Loot” giveaways—each valued at $250. The random drawing will take place during the Gold Medal livestream event. Truly anyone can win!

Contest Rules & FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

I missed the Round 1 or Round 2 deadline. Can I still participate in Round 3?
Yes. Your entry to Round 3 will be accepted up until the due date and you will still be eligible to win the contest, even if you have not participated in Round 1 or Round 2.

Can you tell me more about the random drawing and “Lucky Loot” giveaways?
Yes, we want everyone to participate in the contest, even if you don't think yours will be the very best island. For that reason, everyone who submits an entry to Round 3 of the contest will automatically be entered into a random drawing. During our Gold Medal livestream, we will select four random contest entries to receive a "Lucky Loot" prize package, which will include video game related prizes valued at $250 (or their cash equivalent). The gold, silver, and bronze winning entries will be excluded from the random drawing.

Can you tell me more about how the entries will be judged?
Yes, each entry will receive a total score out of 50 points with 10 points being assigned to each of the following criteria: 1) Innovation: Originality and inventiveness of the sporting event, and creativity in incorporating Fortnite’s unique elements, 2) Scoring: The development of a clear, competitive scoring system which effectively determines an event winner, 3) Style: Visual appeal, thematic consistency of the island, and the immersiveness of the overall atmosphere, 4) Theme: Alignment with the “Summer Games" theme, showcasing elements that reflect the essence of a global sporting event, and 5) Fun: How enjoyable and engaging does the gameplay appear to be?
